Reigning Miss Cayman Islands Universe, Mariah Tibbetts, surprised the students at the Clifton Hunter High School on Monday when she attended the YMCA fashion show held at the school.

The show, which is understood to be a partnership between students and teachers, was remarkably run.  One of the most incredible features of the event was that the clothing worn in the fashion show was designed and sewn by the students themselves.

The young models also showed swagger on the catwalk as they moved with grace and confidence.  They were cheered on by about 75 other students in the audience from other schools.  This expression of support between young people was amazing to witness first-hand.

Lastly, some students performed poetry, imparting encouraging lessons to those in the audience.

At the end of the fashion show, Tibbetts joined the future generation of models (and designers) on stage.  Before a crowd of anxious students and participants, she shared her experiences as a participant in Miss Universe and offered two points of advice.

“You don't need to be wearing the most expensive clothes in the room to be fashionable,” said Tibbetts.  “Fashion is what you make it - always stay true to what feels authentic to you and your personal style and don't feel like you need to match someone else's style,” she continued.

It was obvious to those in attendance that Tibbetts was not only passionate about the event, but enthusiastic about the potential she saw in the students.

“My advice to a young person who dreams to be Miss Cayman Islands would be to believe in themselves and everything they have to offer the universe and go confidently towards their dreams”, she explained. “It is an incredible journey of empowerment and self-discovery that I would love every young person to experience.”

The stunning Miss Cayman Islands Universe was also not in any rush to leave the event.  She stayed on afterwards, spoke kindly to students in the auditorium and in the hallway, posing for photos when requested by students.  One student could be heard saying, “today, I met a celebrity.”

Commenting on the event, Derri Dacres, chairperson of the Miss Cayman Islands Universe committee said that “the pageant represents empowerment and encouragement for young Caymanian ladies.  It is always so rewarding to see our titleholders making such a positive impact on the children in our community.”

Tibbetts now looks forward to her next appearance on June 30 2021 where she will attend awards ceremonies for various primary schools.
